Alert! Be sure you SEE a copy of AKC-FSS papers for any Russian Toy you intend to buy from a U.S. breeder BEFORE you take possession of the dog, or at least copies of AKC-FSS papers for BOTH parents (puppy papers may be in transit), or you may never get your new Russian Toy AKC-FSS registered! Some breeders do not register their Russian Toys with AKC, these dogs would not be eligible to compete in AKC events of any type (conformation, agility, obedience, lure coursing, etc.).

WHERE NOT TO  BUY A DOG

1)  Pet shops: These puppies come from puppy mills, you are NOT rescuing a "poor puppy", you are enabling the puppy mill to replace it with another poor creature, thus condemning the mother to producing ANOTHER litter. If pet shops get stuck with puppies that grow bigger & bigger & older & older, they won't keep selling puppies!! The older they get, the harder they are to sell.  No ethical breeder would EVER put their puppies in a pet shop.   www.nopuppymills.com

2)  Backyard breeders ("GREEDERS"): who breed for money, not to improve the breed (they DO NOT SHOW THEIR DOGS):  These people are 'in dogs' for the $$$$$, stay away!  Ask what registry they use, AKC & UKC are the ONLY legitimate registries, ADBA, CKC (Continental, not Canadian), NAPDR,  UAKC, APRI, APR, APA, ACR, etc., are backyard breeder registries, see

3)  Breeders who have more than two breeds, even if they show: You CANNOT raise more than one or two breeds responsibly & correctly.  This is a person who's in it for the money.

4) Breeders who will not let you see the puppy's parents.

WHERE TO BUY A DOG

4)  BUY FROM A SHOW BREEDER.  Contact the AKC  (www.akc.org)  or Google your desired breed's name with the words "AKC Breed Club"  (ex:  "AKC Labrador breed club") to find an ethical show breeder. To weed out 'bad' show breeders (yes, they do exist), ask how many litters a year they have (2-5 is good; if they ALWAYS have puppies available, BEWARE), where their dogs are kept (house or some outdoor 'kennel'), what do they feed (whatever's on sale is NOT a good answer!), what age do they place their puppies (under 7 weeks for large breeds is NOT good, toy dogs should NEVER leave home before 10 weeks minimum age).  Research the health problems in your chosen breed & ask the breeder if they test their dogs for whatever issues your breed has such as hip dysplasia, PRA, PRCD, heart problems, etc, if they ask 'what's that?' RUN the other way.

5)  Contact breed rescue for your breed (Google your breed and ‘rescue’). They often have wonderful dogs, sometimes even puppies!

6)  Rescue a dog from a shelter. These dogs, do, unfortunately, often have 'issues' that a previous owner could not deal with, that's why they landed in a shelter, so be prepared. Others are strays.
